A ZUAIIT  is a bit like the elephant as seen by the blind men in the Buddhist fable-very different from different points of view, but definitely large and important. One may approach a computer as an executive interested in its effect on profits, as a user with a specific job to be done, as a programmer with a job to do, as a maintenance man required to keep the equipment running, as an engineer hired to design better circuits, as a logician hoping to design better systems, or as a layman who is “just interested.” The title of this article, Computer Education, does not restrict from discussing the education of computer specialists. Computers as a factor in business education and engineering education are most important. Computers as tools in the educational process, semi-independently of the subject matter, are also worthy of consideration. The digital computer industry has a substantial and essential stake in computer education. The concept of “education” that is referred to as “training” by some educators is also included. This chapter discusses the way the task of recruiting and training computer operators, installers, maintenance personnel, and sales representatives is large, expensive, and necessarily done by the manufacturer of the particular machine being considered. Computer education in universities and colleges and in the high schools and communities is discussed in this chapter. Programmed instruction is also described.
